Biography

Catharyna was baptized in Albany, New York, on 3 November 1734, recorded as the child of Johannes Van Renzelaar and Engeltje Livingston. Witnesses to the baptism were Hendrik Van Renzelaar and Margrietje Livingston. [1]

She is a folkloric figure. The wife of General Philip John Schuyler and mother of eight surviving children, Catherine, or "Kitty", is most famous for her bravery in burning her own crops to prevent British troops from acquiring the food resources they could provide. Devoted wife and mother, she was well respected in the society of New York, in which the Van Rensselaers have a deep rooted and long history.
